Hospice 101

What is
hospice care?

Hospice care is specialized care focused on comfort, dignity, and quality of life for people facing serious illness, and support for the families who love them.

Hospice is about comfort, not cure

Hospice care is designed for people with a life-limiting illness when treatment is no longer focused on curing the disease. Instead, care centers on managing pain and symptoms, providing emotional and spiritual support, and helping patients live as comfortably and meaningfully as possible.

Hospice also supports families and caregivers, offering guidance, education, and reassurance during an incredibly difficult time.

Care is typically provided wherever a patient calls home, whether that’s a private residence, assisted living community, or skilled nursing facility.

Who hospice care is for

Hospice care may be appropriate when:

A person has been diagnosed with a serious or life-limiting illness
Curative treatment is no longer effective or desired
The focus has shifted toward comfort and quality of life
Hospice is not about giving up, it’s about choosing care that prioritizes comfort, dignity, and personal wishes.

What hospice care is not

Many families delay hospice because of common misconceptions. Hospice care is not:

Giving up – Hospice focuses on living as fully and comfortably as possible.
Only for the final days – Many people benefit from hospice care for months and in some cases years.
A physical place – Hospice is a type of care, not a location.
Only for the patient – Families and caregivers receive ongoing support.
About hastening death – Hospice neither hastens nor delays the natural course of illness.
Hospice care is about honoring each person’s journey, with compassion and respect.

What hospice care typically includes

Hospice care is provided by an interdisciplinary team that may include:

  • Skilled nursing care and symptom management
  • Pain management and medication oversight
  • Emotional and spiritual support
  • Caregiver education and guidance
  • Coordination of medications, equipment, and supplies
  • On-call support, available 24/7

Care is tailored to each patient’s needs and adjusted as those needs change.

A conversation, not a commitment

Exploring hospice care doesn’t mean you’re making a final decision. Many families reach out simply to ask questions, understand options, or talk through what support could look like.

Our role is to listen, guide, and help you decide what feels right, without pressure
