How to Start a Hospice Conversation With a Loved One

Talking about hospice can feel emotionally heavy. Many families worry about saying the wrong thing or causing distress. There is no perfect script. What matters most is honesty, compassion, and listening.

Beginning the Conversation

Hospice conversations often start best with curiosity rather than conclusions. Open-ended questions can help loved ones share what they are feeling. Examples include:

“How have you been feeling about everything lately?”

“What feels hardest right now?”

“What matters most to you in the coming weeks or months?”

These questions open space rather than forcing decisions.

Framing Hospice as Support

Hospice does not need to be presented as a final step. Many families find it helpful to frame hospice as added support focused on comfort and relief. This approach often reduces fear and defensiveness.

Giving the Conversation Time

These discussions may take place over several conversations. It is okay to pause, revisit, and reflect. Hospice teams can also help guide these conversations, offering language and support when families feel unsure. You do not have to navigate this alone.
